MECHA

Emerging CDFI · National service area

A professional origination desk for community lending nationwide.

Applications arrive online and through the Lawrenceville headquarters. We review credit on the five C’s, with AI-assisted analysis. We package the file to professional lending standard — in English the credit desk can underwrite — and introduce qualified borrowers to qualified lenders anywhere in the United States. The classroom, the translation desk, and the credit file sit in one 501(c)(3) loan fund. We are not yet a certified CDFI. We are on the Technical Assistance path to become one.

01 / Leadership

One office reads the file before it leaves.

MECHA was founded in 1985 to see that Latino residents of Mercer County have representation and services. The mission has not changed: access, advocacy, and self-sufficiency. What we are adding is a financing entity beside the classroom — so a household that learns English here is not sent across town when it needs a small loan, a tool purchase, or a bank that will look at the file.

At MECHA, a reviewer on the desk still authorizes every package. If something is missing, it stays here. AI helps us read documents and keep the five C’s consistent. A partner bank sees a finished file, not a pile of parts.

02 / How we review a file

Every application is reviewed on the five C’s of credit.

Our team evaluates credit history, cash flow, collateral, character, and capacity — the same criteria a lender uses. If the documentation is incomplete, or the credit does not support the request, the file does not go forward.

Weights are published below. That is the underwriting standard we are writing into the Technical Assistance workplan: disclosed, bilingual, and the same from one file to the next.

Credit History · 20%

Tradelines, public records, seasoning, inquiries. When a thin file is the story, we note rent, utilities, and other documented payments — so a lender sees the record, not a blank.

Cash Flow · 25%

Pay stubs or twelve months of bank statements. Household budget. For a microenterprise: a simple P&L and DSCR the credit desk can recast.

Collateral · 20%

When the program requires it: invoice or appraisal, lien search, LTV, insurance. Small-dollar consumer files may be character-based — we say so plainly.

Character · 20%

Time in the community, references, ownership tenure for a business, and — when it applies — completion of MECHA English, citizenship, or financial-education hours.

Capacity · 15%

Global cash flow, household size, existing debt load, guarantor liquidity if a guarantee is in the structure.

03 / Packaging

Each credit file is assembled to professional lending standard.

We prepare files for community, conventional, and — when it is the fit — SBA or USDA programs. Spanish papers are translated at our desk before the package is released. A bank should not have to hire a second translator to underwrite a Hispanic or low-income household.

  1. 01

Government identification and proof of address.

  2. 02

Income: pay stubs or twelve months of business or personal bank statements.

  3. 03

Household budget and a clear use of proceeds.

  4. 04

For a microenterprise: simple P&L, entity papers, EIN letter when one exists.

  5. 05

Personal financial statement and debt schedule on larger requests.

  6. 06

Spanish or English originals — MECHA translates what the credit desk cannot read.

  7. 07

Development-services record when the household used ESL, citizenship, or financial education here.

  8. 08

Collateral package when the program requires it: invoice or appraisal, lien search, insurance.

  9. 09

Ownership, guarantees, and program forms — including SBA or USDA when that is the fit.

  10. 10

Signed completeness checklist. No file leaves Lawrenceville without it.

04 / Pipeline

Every file follows a defined path from intake to funding.

Incomplete files do not proceed. Scoring and packaging are completed at MECHA. What we submit is a file a credit team can underwrite.

  1. 01

    Intake

Bilingual. In the office or by a recorded request. We do not take a Social Security number on this website.

  2. 02

    Ready the household

If English, civics, or a document stands in the way, the classroom and the translation desk work first. A file that is not ready does not move.

  3. 03

    Five C’s

Credit, cash flow, collateral, character, capacity — scored on published weights. AI assists the desk. A reviewer still authorizes the file.

  4. 04

    Package

A completeness checklist. Translations attached. The same stack a credit team expects from a correspondent.

  5. 05

    Credit desk

The file goes to a partner bank, credit union, or CDFI — not to a sales queue. Questions come back to the desk that packed it.

  6. 06

    Funded

The partner books the loan. MECHA remains the bilingual relationship — from Lawrenceville, nationwide.

05 / Why partners work with us

Professionally reviewed files. Authenticated packaging. A team behind the work.

Banks, credit unions, and CDFIs receive a bilingual package aligned to CRA community development — Hispanic Other Targeted Population and Low-Income Targeted Population, nationwide. Questions go to the desk that prepared the file, not a sales queue.

Authenticated credit packages

Each file is reviewed on the five C’s. AI assists verification. A reviewer on the Lawrenceville desk still signs the package out.

Submission-ready documentation

Lenders receive a file prepared to professional underwriting standard — not an unfinished inquiry, and not a Spanish stack they cannot read.

A disclosed Target Market

Hispanic Other Targeted Population and Low-Income Targeted Population. Service area is National. Headquarters in Lawrenceville, New Jersey — Congressional District NJ-03.

Development services on the same floor

English class, citizenship class, translation, and financial education sit next to the credit desk. The borrower is not sent across town to become credit-ready.

What Technical Assistance pays for

A CDFI Fund Technical Assistance award is capacity, not loan capital. Emerging CDFIs may apply. If awarded, MECHA would use TA to become a certified CDFI within the period of performance. The classroom already exists. The financing entity is what we are standing up.

  • A written credit policy and underwriting manual — five C’s, product boxes, exception log.
  • A bilingual loan origination system so a file is a record, not a folder on a desk.
  • Target Market Assessment for Hispanic OTP and LMI Investment Areas nationwide.
  • Board and staff training for CDFI certification, CRA partner reporting, and privacy.
  • BSA/AML and consumer-protection procedures sized for a community loan fund.

TA does not book loans. Partner banks book loans. After certification, MECHA would be eligible to compete for Financial Assistance and to serve as a CRA and BEA partner on community development activity nationwide.
